Making Your Mark: How Demonstrated Interest Can Boost Your Admissions Odds

In a competitive pool, colleges aren't just looking for stats — they're looking for a match. When you engage with a school, you're sending a clear signal: "I see myself here." That reduces their uncertainty and makes it much easier for them to say yes.
Here's how to turn your curiosity into a real advantage:
Visit in Person Nothing replaces walking a campus and picturing yourself there. Register for the official tour and info session so the admissions team knows you came. Any visit before your application deadline counts and visiting while school is in session gives you the best feel for campus culture.
Attend College Fairs Think of a college fair as a targeted meet-and-greet. Register online in advance, then focus on 5–8 schools you've researched rather than wandering. Come with questions, introduce yourself confidently, grab the rep's business card, and follow up with a thank-you note within 48 hours.
Join Virtual Events Sign up for mailing lists on your target schools' admissions pages to stay informed about info sessions and webinars. NACAC also hosts virtual college fairs - a great option when travel isn't possible.
A few habits that pay off:
Check your email. Some colleges track whether you open their messages. Staying on top of your inbox is also just good practice for the road ahead.
Take notes after every event. Jot down a few things that stood out. When it's time to write your "Why Us" essays, you'll have a goldmine of specific college details.
Apply Early. If a school feels like home, Early Action or Early Decision is the strongest way to show it's your first choice.
How I Can Help
I work with students to read between the lines of their campus impressions - figuring out which schools truly fit their goals and building a strategic plan from there. Whether it's role-playing interviews, processing visit notes, or drafting follow-up emails, I'm here to help you put your best foot forward.
