5 Things I Want Every Senior to Know

Summer has just started, but for many seniors the lists of to-dos and college applications are close on the horizon. Despite all of that, remind yourself that senior year doesn't have to be a non-stop stress fest. In fact, it can be one of the most memorable times of your life! Yes, there's some college stuff to do, but it's also your last hurrah with your high school crew. With that in mind, let's go through some reminders for a positive mindset.
1. Don't Let the "Perfect" College Myth Get You Down
You know that one college your cousin's best friend's sister's neighbor went to, and now everyone says it's "the one"? Yeah, let's toss that idea out the window. There's no such thing as one perfect college for you. There are probably dozens, even hundreds, of schools where you'd thrive, grow, and have an amazing experience. Instead of chasing a unicorn, focus on finding schools that fit you – your interests, your learning style, your vibe. You'll be much happier in the long run.
2. Summer is for Exploration (and a Little Fun!)
You've probably heard "start your essays!" a million times (and we are!). Getting a head start is awesome, but don't let it consume your entire summer. Use this time to explore things you genuinely enjoy. Read that book you've been putting off, learn a new skill (juggling? coding? competitive napping?), or volunteer for a cause you care about. These experiences not only make you a more interesting human (which colleges love, by the way), but they also give you great material for those essays. Work life balance is essential. Go to the beach, hang out with friends, make some memories!
3. Your Story is Way More Interesting Than Your Test Scores
While scores are a piece of the puzzle, they're just one piece. Colleges are looking for well-rounded individuals, not just robots who ace tests. Your extracurriculars, your leadership roles, your unique talents, your essays – these are where your personality shines. Don't let a less-than-perfect score define you or stop you from applying to your dream school. Seriously, your story is what makes you YOU.
4. Talk to Adults (Yes, Even Your Parents!)
Hear me out. Your parents, teachers, counselors, and even that quirky aunt who bakes amazing cookies – they've been there, done that. They have a wealth of knowledge and support to offer. Need help brainstorming essay topics? Ask a teacher. Feeling overwhelmed by the application process? Talk to your counselor. Worried about leaving home? Your parents can probably relate. Leaning on the adults in your life can make this process infinitely easier and less isolating. Plus, they might even buy you ice cream if you ask nicely.
5. Embrace the Unknown, It's Going to Be Amazing!
Senior year is a time of transition. It's exciting, a little scary, and full of "what ifs." But here's the secret: the unknown is where all the magic happens. You're on the cusp of something incredible – new friends, new experiences, new ways of thinking. Don't spend all your time worrying about what might happen. Instead, focus on enjoying the ride, making the most of your last year of high school, and getting excited about the adventure that awaits. You've got this, future college student!
This senior year is yours to conquer. Go forth, be awesome, and remember to enjoy every minute of it.
