Post-Tour Follow-Up: Making Your College Visit Count

Writer: Frances fcarhart@outlook.comFrances fcarhart@outlook.com

Wrapping up a college tour is exciting, fun and sometimes overwhelming. Those brochures and info sessions can blend together quickly, so it’s important to keep track of your notes and follow-up in a timely manner. Here are some ways to really make your visit count:

1. The "Brain Dump":

  • ASAP: Within 24 hours (seriously!), grab a notebook or your laptop and jot down everything you remember. Don't overthink it, just download all your impressions: good, bad, and in-between.

2. The Pros & Cons List:

  • Get Analytical: Now that you've got your raw thoughts down, create a structured list. What were the highlights of the visit? What were the potential drawbacks? Be specific! "Great campus vibe" is good, but "Students seemed genuinely engaged in the library, and the student union had tons of clubs represented" is better.

3. The Follow-Up:

  • Thank You: It’s likely that you connected with various campus representatives: staff in the admissions office, faculty who provided information, coaches who met with you, and college students who answered your questions. Send thank-you notes or emails thanking them for their time. This shows initiative and reinforces your interest.

  • Questions? Did something come up after the tour that you forgot to ask? Don't hesitate to reach out to the admissions office for more information or materials not covered on the website.

College tours are a valuable investment of your time. By taking these post-tour steps, you'll ensure that your visits translate into informed college decisions, and you are able to foster some of the connections and relationships you’ve made.
